Torrevieja

TORREVIEJA is Now Spain´s property hot spot.

Despite the economic crisis, so far this year more than 3,000 properties have been sold, making it the leading sales spot nationally.

A huge 83 per cent of properties bought have been re-sales, with only 17 per cent new-builds.

According to the National Statistics Institute, the municipality of Torrevieja locally has the most home sales this year anywhere in Spain.
Prices have never been so attractive, with windows of local real-estate agents indicating two-bedroom properties available from €40,000.

Councillor for Urbanism Paco Moreno (PP), welcoming the sales figures, said they were favourable mainly due to the low prices.

Planning applications for the construction of new housing is still low compared to the last decade when a record 6,000 licenses were requested, but Moreno said the situation was positive.

“There is a moderate increase in productive sectors in these very difficult times.

"Throughout 2013 it will continue to grow, which is a guarantee of stability to prospective investors in Torrevieja,” he said

Hello to the Dollies!
We are very pleased to welcome Bar Labas, from Via Park V, into the League. Captain Greta says that translated Labas means Hello, so the players on the team decided they would be called Labas Dollies. They are a very keen and enthusiastic team, who look like being an asset to the League. The Fixture List is being updated, so that as from January, they will play all the Bye Slots as Friendly Matches.

Also, from the enthusiasm of our existing teams, I know you will all give them a warm welcome into our League. Captains, are kindly asked to help Greta the new Captain, by showing her the ropes during these Friendly Matches, and then next season they will be incorporated into the League for the 2013–2014 Season. Best wishes to the Labas Dollies, enjoy your darts.

Christmas Blind Pairs: At the Captain’s meeting last week, it was agreed to Cancel the Christmas Blind Pairs completely. The decision was not taken lightly, but for events to be a success, we need all our teams to support them, and as two of our teams had made alternative arrangements, it was felt best to cancel this event.

This means that two other events have been rearranged accordingly. The Ladies League Pairs will now be held at the Black Dog, in Torrevieja on the 26th February and hosted by Kevin and Lucy. The Ladies League Invitation Mixed Pairs will now be held at El Balcon, in Los Balconies, on the 2nd April and hosted by Fernando Garcia.

Captains are kindly asked to inform the bars of these changes, and this information is already being distributed. The Updated Fixture list will also be distributed in due course. Thank you all for your cooperation.

In the meantime, keep up the good work, enjoy your darts, and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Torrevieja Hospital Christmas campaign

Torrevieja Hospital has launched a Christmas campaign to collect food and toys in order to help families in need through the festive period. The campaign will be coordinated in collaboration with the Red Cross Torrevieja, which will be responsible for distributing the donations to those who are worst affected by the crisis. The hospital management has praised the solidarity of patients and professionals, commenting on their readiness to support the cause. The Hospital aims to beat its target from last year, when 400 kilos of food were delivered. Donations of imperishable food items, including pulses, preserves, pasta, rice or powdered milk, as well as toys in good condition can be left in the Hospital reception area. The campaign will continue from now through to January 2013.

Christmas Carols in the square Torrevieja

Date: on FRIDAY 14th DECEMBER 2012
Place: Plaza de la Costitucion (in fron of Inmaculada church)
Time: at 17.45h.
Price: Free
The event will be followed by the 'international 'mass', dedicated to the non-Spanish community as part of the 'novena' of the patronal fiestas.
This year will mark the tenth anniversary of the singing of Christmas Carols in the town square by the international community.
Torrevieja is celebrating, once again this December, its patronal fiestas in honour of the ‘Inmaculada Concepción’.

Each evening, during the ‘novena’, the nine days following the main ‘Inmaculada Concepción’ celebration on 8th December, the evening mass has been dedicated to a particular section of the local community. Mostly, each day is dedicated to the residents of a particular area or ‘barrio’ of the town. Following this tradition, on Friday 14th December, 2012 at 7.30 p.m., all ‘non-Spanish’, residents or visitors, have been invited by the priest of the 'Inmaculada Church' Don. Manuel Martínez Rocamora, to join in a special celebration. On this particular evening the mass will be dedicated to the 'foreign' residents of Torrevieja of whatever nationality. Local ministers from other churches such as the Anglicans, Church of Sweden, Norway, Finland etc., have been involved in some of the advance planning and it is anticipated that we shall all join together to sing at least one Christmas Carol where the music, albeit not the words, is internationally recognised. An integral part of the celebration will once again, be the offering of non-perishable foodstuffs, (tinned food, packets etc) which will later be distributed to the needy of the town so that, they too, may enjoy the festive season. Previously, the 'foreigners' have demonstrated an incredible generosity and there were more gifts received during the 'foreigners mass' than on any other evening! Everyone is welcome to come along to the event and several local clubs and associations will, no doubt, be collecting 'goody bags' from their members in order to present a 'joint effort'. Please come along and support this worthwhile effort.

CAROL SINGING TO COINCIDE WITH INTERNATIONAL MASS.
TEN YEARS OF SINGING IN THE TOWN SQUARE!!!

This Christmas marks the tenth anniversary of the annual “Christmas Carols in the Town Square”. This popular and unique event has taken place each December in Torrevieja’s Plaza de la Consitución since 2003. The overwhelming success of previous “Christmas’s Carols in English” events, the singing of Christmas Carols in the main town square by members of various local choral groups accompanied by the PHOENIX CONCERT BAND, has resulted in the fact that this popular event has become a permanent fixture on Torrevieja’s Christmas cultural programme! At 5.45 p.m. on Friday 14th December, just before the ‘International Mass’ (7.30pm), the public are invited to come along to the main town square and join in the singing of Christmas Carols, mostly in English but with a few in Spanish. Song sheets will be available and a collection will be made on behalf of local charity. Last year, well over three thousand people gathered in the main town square to enjoy this typical Christmas celebration, so make sure you get there early!
(N.B. The spectacular and typical nativity scene (“Belen”) will be on public display in time for the ‘Carols in the Square’. The “belen” will be open until after the visit by the ‘Three Kings’ on 6th January.)

Torrevieja Hospital Saves $430 Per Patient Using the Cloud
Pablo Valerio,

In 2006 the new Hospital of Torrevieja, a hospital in a tourist town in the providence of Alicante, opened with a clear vision: Become a leading institution using the newest technologies and optimizing its resources to be the most efficient hospital in the region.

Unlike other public hospitals in the region, this new hospital is managed privately, but it is integrated in the Valencian public health service system, providing free healthcare for the Torrevieja residents and any EU national. Being privately managed, a system becoming more common among hospitals in Spain, makes investment in technology a key factor for profitability. Since the hospital does not receive public funding in form of subsidies, charging the regional government only for every patient attended, the Hospital of Torrevieja needs to be extremely efficient and productive.

One of the first decisions was to move to a one hundred percent paperless environment. This was achieved by focusing on hosting all hospital functions under “Florence,” the integrated management system designed by the Hospital’s IT department in collaboration with Microsoft, HP, Kodak, and Dräguer. The system optimizes storage by using encrypted cloud services to store non-personal identifiable information, including lab tests, medical imaging, and administration data. The system complies with the highest level of privacy protection suggested by the Spanish Health Authority and the European Commission.

The hospital also focused much of its energy on a mobile strategy. The hospital uses text messages to confirm and update doctors' appointments for patients, even providing timely information if their appointment is delayed for any reason. Patients can send a text message (SMS) to check wait times, and Florence automatically calculates the time, matches the cellphone number from its database, and answers the text message. This makes the entire process run more smoothly, and the average wait time is 50 percent lower than the national average for public hospitals.

The hospital has also started to deliver critical test results to doctors via mobile device. The system can also determine if the test results differ significantly from standard values and alert the physician immediately. Doctors and nurses can check the results on their mobile devices with their credentials, and the system logs off automatically after 10 minutes. Healthcare professionals can work on patient records, order additional tests, and amend data using tablets and smartphones. No information is saved on portable devices, which keeps the data secure and private.

Using online access to the test result’s database helps doctors to get them quicker, and that keeps the average hospital stay to one of the lowest in the country, about 4.3 days, compared to 6 days in most other hospitals in Spain.

Florence can be also accessed by patients, relatives, and hospital staff by a series of touchscreen terminals in several areas of the hospital. Families, provided with a special access code, can check their loved one's health status. This code only works within the hospital to avoid any data breach. This enables doctors to spend more time attending patients and less delivering non-critical updates to families.

As you can see, improving the process has increased customer service and patient outcomes. But it also saves money.

The savings of going paperless and using mobile and cloud technology are impressive. The Hospital spends only an average of €571 ($720) per patient per year, compared to the €900 ($1200) spent on average by most public hospitals. The Torrevieja Hospital can manage with €327 less per patient-year because of the low wait times, shorter hospital stays, and more effective decision making.

The Hospital of Torrevieja has received several national and international awards for its innovation, quality of service, patient satisfaction, and efficiency. Now it is helping other similar institutions to install similar systems.

STAGESTRUCK DRAMA GROUP DONATE 1412 EUROS TO AFA TORREVIEJA

The Stagestruck Drama group ended a three night run on Saturday, at the Beluga Theatre in San Fulgencio and donated the proceedings to AFA Torrevieja.

The photo shows Stella ( the author, director, producer and general factotem of the company,) handing Matilde Sanchez, President of AFA Torrevieja, the cheque for 1200 Euros, proceeds from the ticket sales and an additional bonus of 212 Euros being the proceeds from the nights' raffle won by ticket number 93, a lady member of the audience.

Matilde, President of the Alzheimer's Association of Torrevieja and Judy Ferris the Treasurer, both said how absolutely delighted they were with such a generous donation. This help towards the ongoing effort of their Day Center's struggle to cope with the ever increasing demand for care and support of patients with dementia was truly gratefully received.

When Matilde presented Stella with the AFA certificate of appreciation, Stella was delighted as she, with humor, said that she had never received a certificate before.

Thank you to Stagestruck, and a special thank you to the audience for supporting both the group and the Alzheimer's Association of Torrevieja (who actually cover the whole of the Puma 22 area albeit from their base in Torrevieja, hence their title).
We would like to thank all those who supported us over the 3 day event.

AFA Alzheimer’s Association Torrevieja is available for advice and support. We rely on voluntary donations to continue our vital work in our day center and now have a “Buy a Brick” campaign to raise money to build a much needed residential care home for sufferers.

If you need help or advice, or feel you can contribute, call at the AFA shop in Calle Maestro Francisco Valejos in Torrevieja, the AFA Centre in Avenida de La Estacion or by calling Matilde Sanchez on 647119991 or Judy Ferris on 610082593. Email: [email protected]

Torrevieja

Congratulations on raising such a splendid sum for AFA! We in Dramatic Licence have always supported AFA - but the council in SF now insist that in return for giving us the theatre for free we must donate to their own local Alzheimer's society. I would be very grateful if you could PM me on [email protected] if you have found a way round this, as historically AFA Torrevieja has always been our chosen charity.

Fun day planned for Torrevieja

A HOST of activities are planned for Torrevieja’s Associations’ Day this Sunday

As part of the town’s Patronal Fiestas, Sunday has been set aside for a get together of the clubs and associations based in the so called ‘city of salt.’

Starting at 10.30am the event is being held in the fiestas marquee next to the fairground in the harbour area.

Fifty associations of all nationalities will take part in the exhibition of culture and gastronomy.

Included will be the Costa Lions Club (Lions International); environmental group Rutas y Caminos de la Sal; the Nosmo King Club; TRAC (Torrevieja Retired Activities Club) and the Royal Air Forces Association.

Alongside the marquee Torrevieja Cricket Club will be offering a display and the Classic Car club will set up its own exhibition on the seafront promenade, Paseo Juan Aparicio, next to the Hombre del Mar statue.

An extensive programme of entertainment will accompany the exhibition with live music from local artists that will continue into the evening.

British musical representation will be in the form of an hour long concert from the recently formed Campoverde Reef Band, made up of six former professional British musicians.

They will be on stage during Associations’ Day from 1.30pm.

X-Factor Costa Blanca

x-factor-costa-blanca-_2_The biggest and best talent competition, X-Factor Costa Blanca, got underway last week with eight people battling it out in the first heat. The night saw friends and supporters descend on the Emerald Isle, La Florida, to hear judges Eva Ford, Chis Curran and Dave Naughton share their thoughts with the audience. First on stage was 17 year old Jay Bryant, this is never any easy slot and the nerves were evident as Jay launched into I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. However, his second performance was much more confident. Ed Williams was next up with Deep Blue Something’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s. He impressed the judges and Chris Curran likened him the Suede front man Brett Anderson. The third contestant was returning singer Claire Whittaker, who Eva Ford remembered from last year’s competition. Claire has evolved vocally during that time and impressed with her vocals, particularly on Kelly Clarkson’s Beautiful Disaster, and stage presence.

The next contestant is one of the youngest in this year’s competition, 13 year old Aine Carroll. However, this young lady opened her mouth and amazed everyone by singing Someone like you, better than Adele. This was a seriously talented performance and the judges all agreed it was powerful and pitch perfect. Next to burst on stage was 19 year old Spaniard Artur Guillen, who wowed the audience with a rousing performance of Tom Jones’ It’s not Unusual. He then completely amazed everyone with an operatic rendition of O Sole Mio as his second choice.

Maria Evans, 29, was next and gave a very polished performance of Norah Jones, which led the judges to question her professional status. However, despite singing professionally in local bars for a year, her version of Alicia Keyes went awry. 18 year old Janelle was next and chose some difficult song choices, but carried them off with a strong voice full of emotion. Judge Dave Naughton said he was stunned that such a huge voice could belong to such a small person. Finally Millie Leonard took to the stage in an impromptu performance as there was one contestant that didn’t show. Millie sang Amy Winehouse and had the voice, the gestures, and the moves so spot on that the judges asked if she was a tribute artist.

Then it was time for the judges to deliberate and make that all important decision and unfortunately for Jay Bryant he was eliminated…but has the chance to come back under the competition’s wild card provision.

If you would like to take part or watch the X-Factor Costa Blanca visit the Emerald Isle on Monday evenings from 7.30pm.
