TORREVIEJA GOLF SOCIETY AT MAR MENOR ON 1ST APRIL

It is disappointing to report that we again experienced an extremely windy day for the latest visit to our home course Mar Menor Village although the saving grace was that the wind this time was warm. So far this year we have had to endure similar windy playing conditions on all but three of our Monday fixtures and it certainly does not make the game any easier!

The course which is usually immaculately maintained was unfortunately not at its best and the greens and tees in particular were very patchy. Scores on the day, unsurprisingly given the difficult conditions, were poor and only 3 players managed to score 30 points or more with the Captain, Dean Charles, continuing his recent excellent form by comfortably winning division 1 in the Stableford Competition albeit with 33 points only. The scores in division 2 by comparison were even more disappointing and all the winners in this category were probably shocked that they featured in the prizes. The winners on the day were:

Category 1: 1st Dean Charles with 33 points.

2nd Charlie Rodgers with 30 points on count back better last 9 holes.

3rd John Edwards with 30 points.

Category 2: 1st Chris Byron with 26 points.

2nd Lyn Hills with 24 points on count back.

3rd James Herbert with 24 points on count back.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Peter Flood, Ron Smith (2) and Charlie Rodgers with Ron winning the 2’s prize fund exclusively.

The football card draw was won this week by Charlie Rodgers.

Next week on Monday 8th April we are paying our first visit for many years to Altorreal Golf Club located just north of Murcia on the A30 Albacete highway and members unsure of the directions should refer to the notice posted on the web site.

TORREVIEJA GOLF SOCIETY

Stan Boyles Memorial Trophy at Saurines 18th March.

35 players took part in an individual Stableford Competition for the inaugural playing of the Stan Boyles Memorial Trophy at the Nicklaus designed Saurines desert course near Roldan. Stan Boyles, a very popular member of our Society, passed away in March 2012 following a serious respiratory illness and it was decided to perpetuate his memory by playing annually in future for a trophy named in his honour.

We were fortunate to enjoy a beautifully sunny day for this event and the course was in its usual immaculate condition although the severely undulating greens caused many putting problems for a number of our players. The first winner of the splendid trophy was David “Charlie” Rodgers who scored an excellent 38 points to beat our Captain, Dean Charles, who showed a welcomed return to form by scoring a highly creditable 36 points. The full list of winners on the day were:

Category 1: 1st David Rodgers with 38 points.
2nd Ron Beales with 34 points.
3rd Ron Davis with 31 points on count back over last 9 holes.
Sonny Edling and Sheila Aston also scored 31 points in this category.

Category 2: 1st Dean Charles with 36 points.
2nd Roy Aston with 35 points.
3rd Marianne Hunt with 31 points on count back.
John Saunders, Roy Welburn and Rita East also scored 31 points in this category.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Sonny Edling (2), Geoff Branton, Roy Welburn and Geoff Walters. The 2’s prize fund was shared by Geoff Branton, John Connolly and Sheila Aston with Sheila recording two 2’s to receive a double share.

Next week on Monday 25th March we will be playing at Vistabella with a first tee time of 9.00am and members should check their tee times by accessing the web site or referring to the notice board in the Portobello Bar in Campoverde.

DON´T LOOKY LOOKY IN TORREVIEJA

Luck for the looky looky men may be unlucky for you

The Torrevieja government team has finally found what they consider to be a solution to the problem of illegal street sellers in the city, the so called “looky looky men”, by approving the passage of an ordinance that they feel will eradicate the situation completely.

However, rather than attempting to deal with those who are actually committing the acts considered as illegal, the solution from the town hall is to fine the victims, in this case, those who purchase goods from them. Under the guise that the fines will protect innocent buyers from purchasing counterfeited goods, the law not only ignores any kind of action against those carrying out the illegal acts.

They do promise an extensive advertising campaign, which would have to be widespread if awareness is to be raised within the many tourists that the city wants to attract, as well as in every possible language of visitors who may fall foul of the law, as punishing the potentially innocent victims of crime seems an acceptable practice, though the question as to why they don´t act against those responsible first might be an appropriate question to ask should a case reach the inevitable objection through the courts.

NEWS FROM AECC

The AECC Torrevieja office recently received 700€ from Christine Burnham, who wants to thank all who helped raise funds and also a big thank you to Paul and Joe from PJ's bar in Torrevieja. The funds were raised by having a fun race night, a sponsored slim for Christine plus other activities. Christine has been through cancer, but now given the all-clear so wanted to show her gratitude for the care she received and wanted all proceeds to go to AECC.

Twelve year-old Tamara, the daughter of Gabriella from GT's bar in Los Dolces and two of her friends raised 50€ for AECC. Tamara said they wanted this for a cancer charity because her mum’s friend had breast cancer. At Easter they are going to bake small cakes and sell them to family and friends to raise more money for cancer; very heart-warming to see children of that age show such passion and understanding.

Karen from Restaurant Rianxeira in La Regia, Orihuela Costa, organized a 10k walk and raised 314€, donating 157€ to Maria and the Pink Ladies on behalf of AECC, the other half to the St. Patrick's day parade.

AECC organised a raffle at a Bono and John Lennon tribute show at Bar Rocajuna, raising 108€.

Pamela Howard from the La Siesta golf society donated 1,237€, so a big thank you to them and to all of the others mentioned and to those that have not been specifically mentioned, they are also gratefully thanked.

Maria Wilson, President of the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa branch of AECC is asking for more volunteers for the Torrevieja office and would also like men to come forward to help AECC as “Pink Panthers”! Similar to the Pink Ladies, which have raised many thousands of euros for AECC, men should also recognise the need to help charities such as AECC. Maria can be contacted on 633-487-595.

Volunteers required to help protect Torrevieja’s Parks

TORREVIEJA IS blessed with two of the largest salt lakes in Europe, surrounded by natural parkland, with is not just beautiful to look at and explore but is also home to a variety of indigenous wildlife and many different species of birds. Although the municipality has professionals who look after and tend to the area, there is always a need for a few more like minded people, to keep the parks safe, secure and looking their best.

Step up the Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal, otherwise known as the Volunteers of La Mata, an international group of volunteers who help look after the Natural Park of the lake of La Mata. Now more than ever they are needed due to cuts in the staffing because of the crisis and they hope to take part in several major projects in the near future.

Amongst the duties performed by members, this includes watching out for dogs off leads, which is one of the biggest threats to the wildlife, especially now that there will soon be nesting birds on the ground. A new litter pick up campaign will take place in El Chaparral on the 23rd of March. They have made comprehensive files of the fauna and flora seen on walks which is invaluable information to pass onto those interested in touring these beautiful areas of the city. Typically their duty walks are as and when they can, with no set structure, and they go in pairs. If problems are sighted, the center is notified, which the center then deal with. Under no circumstances to volunteers confront the public, so volunteers do not have to worry on that score.

They would welcome newcomers to their ranks so as to help maintain these beautiful parks, as to the way it is now. Several members are happy to take groups of up to 30 visitors round the Park to explain what there is to see and to encourage new membership. The language used is English. Club Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Cars

Club Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Cars met recently at the Lo Monte Hotel on what was billed as 'The Walled Village Run'. The weather was glorious with most of the members wearing light clothing after the early morning chill. Leaving Lo Monte, the convoy set off north with quite an eclectic mix of 17 classic cars.

Passing through the villages of Los Canovas, Los Tuelos and on to the town of Totana. Leaving Totana, cars climbed the steep winding narrow road to the destination - the walled village of Aledo, passing on route the Monasterio De Santa just outside the village.

On arrival the cars were displayed in the ample car park on the edge of the village whilst the members and guests took a short stroll through the quaint but well maintained cobbled streets of Aledo to get their caffeine fix. The village has many restaurants and coffee stops so it was not long until members were ready to explore this artistic – historic village with the main attraction being the church and castle in its square at the furthest point. From this location the views are breathtaking with snow on the mountains north of Granada in sight.

After spending some time looking around the village, members then headed back down the hill and south through Totana to the pre booked restaurant where, after the meal, a group of Spanish people from a coach party invited members to dance. This little twist finished the run off nicely.

Anyone wishing to visit Aledo go to Totana and take the MU502 which takes you directly to the village and turn right into the car park. Aledo lies on the southern edge of the Sierra De Espuna Parque Natural.

If you would like to join Club Torrevieja on rallies, please visit www.ClubTorrevieja.com or contact Ron Blackwell on 966 791 212 or come along to one of the monthly meetings which is every first Wednesday of the month at 19.30 in the Cafeteria Marina Club in the International Marina.
