A compact farming town between the Sierra de los Frailes and Sierra de Crevillent, named for two centuries under the Dominican lordship of Redován and an independent municipality since 1926.
Dominicans and mountain fields
Hondón de los Frailes sits at about 415 metres between close mountain fronts. Its church, low houses and fields occupy a corridor only a few kilometres south of neighbouring Hondón de las Nieves.
The name recalls the Dominican College of Preachers, which controlled the former lordship of Redován from 1616. Vines, almonds and olives continued to shape the land after Hondón de los Frailes became an independent municipality in 1926.
