Thinking of bringing my business to Torrevieja

Hi all,
I currently live in England with my boyfriend who lived in Torrevieja for most of his life.
We're thinking of possible opportunities for us in Torrevieja as we both are in the fitness and nutrition industry.
I personally run a freelance personal training business locally to me in an area that isn't wealthy at all, by focussing on two types of clients. Women being one group of clients and doctors referrals/cardiac rehabilitation patients the other. I also run classes and nutritional education courses too and would be looking to bring all of this with me.
Cutting to the chase, what are my chances of survival? I'm not afraid of hard work as I've had to build up here in my little village in England but I also understand that my services are a luxury not a necessity, except my gp and cardiac side which I'd look to work with local gps, clinics and hospitals if that's possible?
Any advice would be very much appreciated!
Sarah.

Bingo in Torrevieja.

Playing bingo in bars in Torrevieja was very popular and brought much needed business to the area. Any idea why bars have recently stopped offering this popular activity.

Moving to Torrevieja

Hi all
I have just taken early retirement and I am coming to Torrevieja from UK March 5th with views of possibly settling here
I have been looking online at places in .Habaneras avenue area and wonder if anyone could comment on area. I am planning on renting 3-6 months and take it from there dependant on circumstances. Also if anyone can suggest other areas near town centre I would appreciate.

Anyone with a studio or 1 bed to rent I would also be happy to hear from. Places I have been looking at online are from 250-350euros a month furnished.

regards Sandy

Torrevieja

Sandy, I've worked in that area a few times. If its the same one I'm thinking of, just be aware it's nowhere near the shopping centre. Its very Spanish but with increasing influence of Russian buyers. Most of the buildings are apartment blocks built close together, but with some nice Garden Squares dotted about and close to the beach. To be fairly honest, central Torrevieja is not a place I'd retire to.

Thanks Marko, I am going to rent maximum 6 months before deciding long term plan.

Sabadell CAM Bank

I am just wondering whether any other person has experienced the inefficient manner in which the Sabadell CAM bank works.

My friend and I went into what was the CAM Bank at Almeda del Mar. She wanted to set up a direct debit for her SUMA car tax and I wanted to cancel an existing direct debit and set up a new one for car insurance.

We were told that you have to go to Torrevieja to do transactions like that.

So off we went to Torrevieja branch, parked the car and joined the queue of many! When we eventually sat down at a desk we were told in no uncertain terms: "If you don't speak Spanish we cannot deal with you."

My friend had all the relevant information from SUMA to initiate the direct debit but still the woman would not do it. She was unhelpful and extremely rude.

Whilst we both know some Spanish, when it concerns financial matters we like to have someone who speaks some English. Considering the CAM was originally supposed to be a Bank that was conducive to English speaking people they are now sadly lacking in customer relations.

We have both been in what was the CAM Bank for many years and have never been treated in such an off-handed fashion.

In fact we shall be transferring our accounts to a more efficient bank and especially a bank where the staff know what they are doing and are polite to their customers.

Despite several visits to the Punta Prima branch, my friend never receives any post from the bank, and despite knowing my post office box address which they have been using for the past 12 years they started sending private information to a box which I do not use.

Torrevieja

Hi Daisy,

I know everyone enjoys a little bank bashing but look at it from the bank's view and imagine going into Barclays in the UK and trying to setup a direct debit and not speaking English.

If the bank were to get anything wrong then I'm sure you wouldn't be very happy - I think there is an important message here that people living in a foreign country should try and learn at least enough Spanish to get by or take someone who can translate.

best wishes I know this is an old thread.

Why not join a bank where they do speak English, I speak fairly good Spanish but I certainly would not trust my money in my Spanish, in fact I've lived here for 24 years and have never heard of a Spanish Bank where none of the staff can speak English, at least one of the staff speak English in all the banks on the Costas.

Tracking down a "lost" pension

A typical scenario with a client is "I have three pensions through three companies I have worked for. I am up to date with two of them, but have lost contact with the third company, which I think is defunct. How can I find out what this pension might be worth?"
Quite often a client will actually not bother to track the pension down as they feel that it will be worth very little. The fact is that pension benefits from even short periods of employment can run into many thousands of pounds. So it's in your interest to track these pensions down and claim the benefits - it is after all, your money! So how do you track down a lost pension? The Department for Work and Pensions runs a tracing service, which is the best place to track down a former occupational pension. The phone number is 0044 845 600 2537 and yes, this can be dialled from Spain or you can visit their website at www.pensionservice.gov.uk. It's important that when you take your pension you take the full benefits that you have earned throughout your working life. Also, do not underestimate the importance of your State Pension. For a free forecast, go to the same website.
Over the past 2 years pension funds have fallen dramatically and this has caused a few dilemmas. One of my recent clients has a small paid up pension in a managed growth fund that has fallen more than 20% in the past year. He has been offered by his pension provider to switch his money into a safer fund over the next two years before retirement. He wanted to know if this is the right time to switch, or is he better off staying put in the hope of market recovery. This method of switching is often referred to as "lifestyling" and is designed to protect clients from big pension fund falls close to retirement. If it is a 'small' fund, you may have other pensions and be able to afford to leave it invested past 65, giving it more time to recover before you need to draw an income. Whether to switch or stay depends on your tolerance to risk and how important this pension is to your overall retirement.
Another option is to transfer the fund into a QROPS approved pension scheme. You can transfer the pension fund into such a scheme and then there is no need for you to purchase an annuity, you can simply drawdown income from the pension fund. Therefore, the money can stay invested and can benefit from the market recovery. But it's important that you claim all the money that you are entitled to from your pension company. Dig out all the old papers and letters from the various pension providers and insurance companies. Contact the company to ensure that they have your present contact details and also ask them for a value. If you feel that QROPS may be of benefit to you then please contact me and I can have a look at your pension papers. There are positives and negatives to QROPS (as there is with anything in life!) check our website at aesinternational.es
