TORREVIEJA GOLF SOCIETY - MAR MENOR 4 FEB 13

We had an excellent turn out of 38 players for our latest visit to our home course Mar Menor Village although it is doubtful whether the number would have been as many if it had been advertised in advance that the competition on the day was to be a Medal Stroke play event.

Whilst it is not universally popular with our members, Medal play is a true reflection of the individual player’s performance on the day and definitely requires a different mind set to playing in a Stableford competition.

Conditions on the day were fairly benign compared with the last few weeks and the course was in first class shape. However, the fact that we do not play this scoring format on a regular basis certainly showed, with most players having at least one card wrecking score during their round.

No player managed to play to their handicap but the winners of both divisions each registered respectable scores of 74 net and Sheila Aston fully justified her elevation to the category 1 division with another good round carding a net 75.

The list of winners on the day were:
Category1: 1st Kevin Thornton with a net 74.
2nd Sheila Aston with a net 75.
3rd Geoff Branton with a net 77 on count back.
Tommy Clarke was the unlucky player in this division who missed out on the prizes on the count back rule.

Category 2: 1st David Lock with a net 74.
2nd Frank Robbins with a net 79 on count back.
3rd Roy Hills with a net 79.

As a consolation, a prize for the best Stableford score with 33 points was awarded to John Edwards.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Frank Robbins, John McArthur, Stewart McKay and David Lock but no 2’s were recorded this week.

The football card draw was won by our only guest player, Ron Davis, who has now decided to join the Society as a member.

Next week we will be playing at Font del Llop with a first tee time of 10.30 and members should check the new web site for their start times and directions to the course or the notice board in the Portobello Bar in Campoverde.

Swimming Pool

Has anyone ever had to have work done on their pool such as having the skimmers re aligned. The pool did have a system that pumped excess water off to a water feature this doesn't work anymore and we need to add skimmers. Need a person who will not overcharge and who knows what they are doing. The house is at San Fulgencio. Any contacts please?

Torrevieja’s Burns Supper

THE TORREVIEJA Scottish Country Dance Group held their annual ‘Burns Supper’ at the Los Rosales Restaurant on Wednesday 23 January, 2013. The evening was also a fundraising event and all monies raised after expenses will be donated to the ‘Torrevieja Stroke Support Group’. The group spokesman said that “A lovely evening was had by all, the meal was excellent with all the usual trimmings for a Burns Supper, the entertainment was very enjoyable. Andy Ramage addressed the Haggis with real spirit (Whisky), and entertained us with Song and poems.”

The man holding it all together on the night was local Irish entertainer Gerry Shaw, who was in charge of the music and sang a large variety of Scottish Ceildh along with dancing to popular music.

Joining in the celebrations were their Founders, Mr Joseph Killeen and Mrs Louie Killeen, who greeted them on arrival with a standing ovation accompanied by Bagpipes played by Mr Barrie Waddington. Barrie also piped in the Haggis and entertained the group with some popular tunes on the pipes and guitar, although not at the same time!

The organizers wanted to pass on their thanks to “all who attended, 64 in total, as well as the people in the background who helped with organising the event, the speakers who gave the usual toasts and the committee. A superb evening. Well done.”

If anyone would like to take up Scottish Country Dancing, the group meet every Thursday at 3.00pm until 5.30pm at the Los Rosales Restaurant, on the Lemon Tree Road, Guadamar. Newcomers would be made most welcome and taught the various steps to all of the dances, which they teach themselves, because as they admit “because we enjoy ourselves, come and join us.”

TORREVIEJA NEW OFFICE FOR EDE-ENERGY

Electric cars

EDE-Energy is a pioneering company which specializes in the assembly and maintenance of charging points for electric vehicles. With last week’s announcement that it will open an office in Torrevieja a spokesman said that it now intends to implement this ground breaking technology throughout Alicante and Murcia.

Commercial Manager, Antonio Luis Fernandez, explained that there are currently many municipalities that are starting to equip themselves with the electric charging stations that are needed for electric vehicles to circulate independently.

The electric car produces no greenhouse gas emissions and no noise pollution. Fernandez explained that the Torrevieja based office is primarily intended to serve the administrations concerned in siting such stations in residential and tourist areas in Alicante and Murcia, and with residents increasingly aware and interested in purchasing this type of vehicle, for urban journeys, the demand will increase enormously in the next 2 or 3 years.

As well as the obvious advantages with much lower emission and pollution the expenditure required for running an electric vehicle is three times lower than that derived from fossil fuel. But the one major obstacle preventing the launch of electric cars in Spain is the absence of a supply network for charging them up.

However in 2012, only 1,500 such vehicles were registered in Spain. Fernandez feels though that the improvement to the charging network will bring with it a corresponding increase in the number of electric cars that are purchased.

Torrevieja welcomes Russian businesses

Mayor Eduardo Dolon is greeted by Russian Minister Mayor Eduardo Dolon is greeted by Russian Minister
TODAY, FRIDAY is the final day of the inaugural Costa Blanca Russian Meeting Point, which is taking place in the foyer of Torrevieja’s magnificent International Auditorium. The event opened on Wednesday morning with more than 30 exhibitors displaying their Real Estate, Banking and Investment offers to a selected audience. At 11.45am on Wednesday, Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon, members of the Municipal Government and some opposition councillors, were given a stand by stand tour of the event, meeting each and every one of the exhibitors and staff who were in attendance at the time.

The event is closed to the public as this is trade event allowing local RealEstate and Investment companies to showcase their offerings, initiatives, services plus luxury goods such as watches, jewelry and cars, to an invited group of Russian Investment companies, with the focus on bringing investment capital to the Costa Blanca, and in particular Torrevieja.

This is the first exhibition and conference that has been held in the International Auditorium. With thirty large stands, the foyer area is so large that upwards of possibly one hundred could be catered for, for a different style of show, with additional stand display areas also available on the first floor and cafe area, while the main auditorium can cater for upwards of more than 1,400 people for a conference or concert event and the smaller Roman Auditorium, 300.

With that number 1,400 in mind, Eduardo Dolon said that one of his highest priorities during his first term as Mayor is to seek hotel investment because the city finds itself in a ‘Catch 22’ situation, in that the first question asked by Event Organizers is about the hotel situation, of which Torrevieja has less than 2,000 beds to offer, throughout the city.

It’s hoped that this first event will become an annual affair, a meeting point for entrepreneurs and citizens with an interest in learning more about the Russian marketplace and for Russian investment specialists to chose the Costa Blanca for their projects, especially in Hotels, entertainment and housing. Many Russian companies, especially from the real estate sector were hoping to attract Russian investors and residents who will see the event as an opportunity to invest and start new business ties on the Costa Blanca.

The Costa Blanca Russian Meeting Point is organized by Mercaseguro Tok Group, SL, and they have managed to capture the attention of more than 60 Russian entrepreneurs and investors, plus entrepreneurs from different parts of Spain. The event has the support of the Russian Consulate, the Russian Orthodox Church, Ukrainian associations and the President of Hostemur.

Today, Friday, 25 January, the Consul of Kazakhstan is planning on visiting as he is keen to see first hand the businesses in the area, and to organize meetings between businessmen from his country and those here on the Costa Blanca. While the show is closed to the public, organizers invite all those Russian citizens who are interested in purchasing property, investing or starting a businesses on the Costa Blanca. Doors open at 10.00am with more information available by email; [email protected] or their website:www.costablancarmp.com
